A Procedure to Prepare Sand–Clay Mixture Samples for Soil–Structure Interface Direct Shear Tests

A large number of experimental studies on sand–clay mixtures are well documented in the literature; however, preparation protocol is rarely clearly detailed or varies a lot according to authors. Variations technique obviously increases challenge comparing different test results. As consequence, sample for should be kept as constant possible ensure homogeneity and uniformity samples limit result variability. This paper develops procedure how prepare interface direct shear tests. Sand–clay prepared with Fontainebleau sand, kaolinite clay distilled water by S1 (sand–water–clay) protocol. The reconstituted specimens assessed measuring content density three slices from top bottom across specimens. repeatability checked oedometer can used preparing mixture tests investigate influence other effects (e.g., temperature) mechanical behavior soil–structure interface. It has demonstrated great performance good shape, compared traditional reconstitution techniques. With procedure, we obtain repeatable results well.
